Following Jesus sometimes places us in situations where our faith is challenged or opposed. In Acts 4:5-14, Peter and John stand before the Sanhedrin, the highest religious council in Israel, after healing a man born lame and boldly proclaiming Jesus as the source of that healing. The previous section (Acts 4:1-22) showed us the broader scene: the miracle, the crowd’s response, the rulers’ resistance, and the call to surrender in resurrection peace. Today, we zoom in on verses 5-14 to see what happens when faithful believers face direct questioning and accusation.

Jesus prepared His followers for such moments. He warned that living for Him would bring trouble, but He also promised His presence and the Holy Spirit’s help when we must give an answer. In Matthew 10:19-20, Jesus said, “When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speaks, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” That promise is exactly what we observe in Peter and John. When we yield to the Holy Spirit in those pressure-filled moments, God enables us to respond with clarity, courage, and righteousness, not in our own strength, but in His.
